How do intracellular bacterial pathogens manipulate host cellular processes to establish infection? 


Bacterial pathogens have co-evolved with their hosts and utilize sophisticated strategies to survive and replicate inside host cells and evade host immune systems. The centerpieces of the strategies are (1) bacterial “ effector proteins” that are delivered into the host cytosol and work to modify or disturb cellular functions, and (2) macromolecular assemblies found on the bacterial surface that are the machines responsible for effector transport. Employing techniques ranging from genetics, phylogenetics, biochemistry and cell biology to structural biology, such as X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy, we study underlying molecular mechanisms of bacterial infection using the intracellular pathogen Legionella pneumophila.
